ChromeGoogle's Chrome OS Netbook will feature a host of built-in security technologies designed to protect users from malware and other threats, a Google engineer said at the RSA Conference last week.

Will Drewry, a Google software security engineer, said the fact that the company's Chrome OS is an open source project allows for constant feedback from developers regarding security design. This, he said, should reassure those acquiring a Google Netbook about the product's security.

Google plans to release a consumer version later this year and a business version featuring more management muscle in 2011, Drewry said.

All of the Google Netbook products will ship with the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) installed for security in key storage and multi-factor authentication in the future, as well as a "trusted bootpath," Drewry said. TPM is an industry-standard hardware module based on an architecture from the industry forum Trusted Computing Group.

The Google Chrome OS is a "hardened" operating system, according to Drewry. The auto-updating and sandbox features are inte...

TwitterMore than 10 billion tweets have been posted on microblogging service Twitter.

This clearly indicates Twitter's growing popularity, as it was only in November 2008 that the one billionth tweet was posted. Volume reached 50 million daily about a year ago.

The Web user behind the 10 billionth tweet and the content hasn't been revealed.

The news comes as Virgin Media Business revealed that one in five tweets contains a reference to a product or a brand.

Furthermore, while 57 of the FTSE 100 companies have signed up to the microblogging service, 72 percent have not used their account to respond to consumers that enquire or make comments about their service.

"With so many people sharing their thoughts online, it's no surprise that many are talking about companies. Clearly this presents an excellent opportunity for companies to engage with customers, but many are missing out," said Phil Stewart from Virgin Media Business.

Virgin Media Business said it believed many signed-up to Twitter to stop cyber squatters getting their first.

"Creating a Twitter account and leaving it dormant or not responding to tweets by your ...

ExplorerMicrosoft sends flowers, cites the 'good time' with IE6 (see image, below)

The mock funeral for Microsoft's Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) last night was more Irish wake than somber processional, the Web design firm that hosted the event said today.

"It was great to get together with other people in the business and share remembrances of IE6, commiserate together," said Jon Clark, the business development manager for Aten Design Group of Denver, Colo. "People were really happy at the funeral, and it was all in good fun."

Last week, Aten Design announced the death of IE6 on a site, IE6funeral.com, that offered a short obituary and an invitation to a funeral on March 4.

"Internet Explorer Six, resident of the interwebs for over 8 years, died the morning of March 1, 2010, in Mountain View, California, as a result of a workplace injury sustained at the headquarters of Google, Inc.," the obit read. "Internet Explorer Six, known to friends and family as 'IE6,' is survived by son Internet Explorer Seven, and grand-daughter Internet Explorer Eight."

The Google and March 1 references came from the search giant's recent an...

MessengerWindows Live Messenger's protocol has often faced criticism for its lack of standards. Today in a world of cross-platform communications and open software development these arguments have never been stronger. Kip Kniskern has raised questions to why this in the case within the light of Facebook Chat supporting XMPP:

Well of course to us, it "makes sense" to interoperate with Facebook (we hate having to keep the browser open during a FB chat), but Windows Live Messenger has been a notoriously closed system in the past, so we’re not sure it will make sense to Microsoft. However if it means losing customers who find themselves using Facebook Chat more and Windows Live Messenger less, that may change. We should be hearing more about the Windows Live Platform later this year, so maybe there’s hope that Facebook Chat may be part of that "major focus".

In response Dh...

MusicAs I am somewhat involved in the radio industry as a former club deejay back in NYC and also still periodically active in internet club deejaying, I am not a fan of this performance tax issue currently going on that is trying to be passed that would allow that supposive "Recording Industry to impose taxes on each song played on a public broadcast either on radio or online etc.!

This affects anyone who is currently on radio and many radio broadcasting associations(even internet radio stations)!

Quote "The recording industry wants to impose a performance tax that would financially hurt local radio stations, stifle new artists and harm the listening public who rely on free local radio."

Click here: http://www.noperformancetax.org/ to get your voice heard and tell the recording industry, you do not want any performance tax whcih ultimately goes to many recording industrys that arent even in the United States! This is very important and I would like those of you concerned to get your opinions voiced and heard so that this does not become a reality!!!
